I am so excited for these next two episodes. I am doing a two-part series and I feel like it is exactly what so many of us need as we wrap up this holiday season.
When it comes to the home in the holidays there is so much focus on decorating, cleaning, and hosting, and it can be overwhelming if you are not actively making sure you are doing things intentionally and creating balance for yourself. In these episodes, I am going to dive into space care. I hope these next couple of episodes give you a break and help you get quiet and intentional about your house in a way that is really going to support you in this season of busyness and fun.

[01:35] What is space care?
The idea of space care is that caring for our environment and intentionally setting up spaces that support our everyday life is a form of self care.
[06:06] Phase 1: Releasing
Phase number one of four is the releasing phase. Think of this as fall and this phase is all about letting go of what is not working. It is important to do this first. It can be items that are not working but it can also be like deeply rooted limiting beliefs, other people’s opinions, or maybe physical items. In this phase, we’re identifying what we’re holding on to that’s not serving us and then we’re giving ourselves permission to let it go so that we can make space for something even better.
[08:48] Limiting beliefs we have around our home 10:14When we look at something that’s not working well in our house, we tend to look at the physical thing, like the pile of junk, or the room that doesn’t function well. These negative feelings can actually be affecting this a lot and they’re really hard to kind of identify and call out because they’re thoughts and feelings that come and go. Having these negative feelings about our spaces is natural so I don’t want you to shame yourself, or feel bad for not liking things about your home. I want you to understand that when we dwell on them and when we don’t use them as a tool to inform actual action steps that we can take to make things better, that’s what’s not serving us. Let’s bring these negative thoughts and emotions up to the surface so we can get clear on what needs to change.
[14:32] Phase 2: Cleansing
Number two is our winter phase and cleansing phase. This phase is all about clearing away smaller things that are unpleasant or unwanted. This can be things like a little negative thought that comes up or just cleaning your house kind of like maintenance cleaning. With the cleansing stage, the most tangible version of this principle is in cleaning your house and looking at your approach and how you’re creating a sustainable cleaning routine. It can also encompass daily homecare, and making little small tweaks to your space.
[16:19] 3 questions to focus on in the cleansing phase
The three questions from the journal that I would say to focus on are, number one, if you avoid cleaning your house at times and this feels difficult for you to have a strong routine, why is that happening? Are you overwhelmed? Do you just hate cleaning? Then how does a clean home make you feel? Because if you are comfortable in the mess you don’t have to change that. You can live however you want. But if it does make you feel uneasy, uncomfortable, unsettled, to have your home not be clean, just kind of reflecting on how a clean home makes you feel. mentally versus just like physically seeing it can be illuminating. We’re not beating ourselves up for the stuff we haven’t done. We’re just taking an objective look, and asking why this is happening. Is it something that I believe it is or something that I’m doing? Giving yourself that grace and really being kind of self-aware is going to help you change it.
